0.1% Sales Tax, Police Spending, & Infrastructure

March 24, 2026

During public comments at the March 24, 2026, Federal Way City Council special meeting, I urged the council to slow down and gather more information before voting on a proposed tax.

The presentation raised serious questions about the city’s long-term financial outlook. A tax projected to generate approximately $3 million would still leave a much larger budget gap to address in the coming years.

I also questioned several police-department expenses, including take-home vehicles, recently purchased police vehicles, testing Tesla vehicles, cameras, drones, bonuses, and out-of-state travel. Public safety is essential, but taxpayers deserve to know that every dollar is being used wisely.

Finally, I explained why infrastructure must remain a top budget priority. Residents can take certain steps to protect themselves, but individuals cannot build and maintain the roads and public systems our community depends on.

Government should not respond to every budget shortfall by threatening cuts to public safety or services for children. The council should examine the entire budget, establish clear priorities, and understand the long-term consequences before asking taxpayers for more money.
